The Chase star Mark Labbett reveals life-changing diagnosis: ‘No arguments now’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The 52-year-old Chaser appeared on Loose Women today to speak out about being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and to represent plus-sized men as part of the ITV programme’s Men’s Body Stories campaign.

“Recently I’ve been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes which, given the amount of sugar I’ve eaten over the years, I’m not gonna complain,” he said. “I’ve done the crime so now I’m doing the time.”

The Chase favourite, who is known as The Beast on the quiz show, kept an upbeat outlook on his news, however, insisting: “I take the positives out of it.

“Those who’ve got diabetes know there’s actually several indicators,” he continued. “They check for cholesterol, blood sugar, weight is one of them. And my indicators are all quite comfortably in the yellow zone with one big one in the red zone: my BMI.”

Mark added: “In some sense it made it easier, just no arguments now. I’ve enjoyed being this heavy, I always used to say I’ve got away with it. Well, now I haven’t so the weight’s coming off.”

The gameshow favourite, who has already lost a couple of stone since receiving the news, said that he is not on a strict diet to lose weight as result of his diabetes, but that he has dramatically cut his sugar intake out of necessity.

“It’s a lot easier when you know you have to,” he admitted.

He also confessed that he hasn’t struggled with feeling hungry as a result of the changes to his diet, saying: “Maybe it’s true what they say, that sugar is its own appetite.”

The TV star went on to strip down to his trunks live on air, emphasising that he felt their men’s line-up needed to represent bigger sizes and a more diverse range of body types.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.

The Chase continues tonight at 5pm on ITV.
