Some viewers best remember Sally Field as a buoyant, beachcombing teenager and an airborne sister of the cloth. To others, she is a pioneering factory worker and an uncompromising farm owner, and to still others, she is Mary Todd Lincoln and Forrest Gump’s beloved mama.

Now, Ms. Field will tell her own story in her own words, in a memoir that will be published next year. Grand Central Publishing said on Wednesday that it had acquired Ms. Field’s memoir, which is titled “In Pieces,” and which chronicles her life and career spanning the TV shows “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun,” her Academy Award-winning performances in “Norma Rae” and “Places in the Heart,” and other popular films including “Murphy’s Romance,” “Steel Magnolias,” “Soapdish,” “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Lincoln.”

Ms. Field, who spent more than five years writing “In Pieces,” said in a statement that the book was about “the little girl that I was, about the teenager who backed into becoming a celebrity, and about the craft that taught me to stand on my feet, a craft that helped me find my way out of a complicated childhood.”

Ms. Field, who is also a three-time Emmy Award winner and a recipient of the National Medal of Arts, grew up in Pasadena, Calif., raised by entertainers and close to Hollywood, where she broke through on “Gidget” at the age of 17. Grand Central Publishing said in a news release that she “has never extensively discussed her private life.”

Millicent Bennett, the imprint’s executive editor, said in a statement that Ms. Field had told “a raw, gorgeous, and moving account of life as a woman in the second half of the 20th century.”

Grand Central Publishing said it plans to release “In Pieces” in the fall.
